Academic Program

Bachelor of Arts (BA)
The communication studies major at UNCG explores human communication as a means of connecting people, creating change, and working toward a just world. The undergraduate program is a solid foundation for a variety of professional and entrepreneurial careers and also prepares students for graduate studies in communication and related fields.
Recent alumni hold roles in public relations, event planning, marketing and sales, real estate, project management, insurance, fundraising and development, and advocacy.
Undergraduate Minor
The 18-credit hour minor offers interested students from other disciplines a broad, flexible foundation in key areas of the field.

MAster of Arts (MA)
The communication studies master’s degree offers a course of study centered around the belief that communication is formative and foundational to human identities, relationships, and communities, and that ethical and strategically effective communication can be the means of critiquing, constructing, and transforming identities, relationships, and communities.
Focus Areas
Our program offers courses and research opportunities that focus on three key areas of communication in personal, professional, and public contexts:
- Identity & Culture
- Community Engagement & Public Advocacy
- Organizational & Relational Communication
Across these focus areas, our program is also noted for its commitments to communication pedagogy, instructor training, and assistantship opportunities.
The M.A. in Communication Studies requires 30 credit hours of mandatory core courses, elective course work, and the capstone experience.
ACCELERATED BA TO MA PROGRAM
The CST Department now offers a BA to MA Accelerated Degree Program (ADP) for students interested in completing master’s-level education more efficiently. Students admitted to the ADP may count up to 12 hours of graduate-level coursework toward both the BA and MA degrees in Communication Studies.
If you are interested in the ADP, we recommend that you contact a CST advisor no later than the beginning of the spring semester of your junior year. We also recommend that you complete CST 300 during the fall, spring, or summer of your junior year.
