The day I graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (May 30, 1990), I visited Dr. Jody Natalle and I asked her the same question many of you most want to know. “Dr. Natalle, now that I have a degree in Communication Studies for what job does this prepare me?” She answered, “You have a well-rounded education that has prepared you to follow your passion. What are you passionate about?” That was certainly not the answer I was expecting but it turned out to be quite profound.
After leaving the University I became an account manager for an advertising firm. A few years into this career and a failing economy, I decided this was not in line with my passion. I soon realized I was a good sales person and my new goal was to become a National Sales Manager.
In 1992 I joined the staff of NationsBank in their Dealer Financial Services Division and truly wondered how would a degree in Communication Studies prepare me for a life in finance? I quickly learned that finance was a by-product of the job but interpersonal relationships would be the key to my success. Although it has been 18 years since graduation, I can say that I still use the principles I learned in Communication Theory. I’ve applied the Johari window tool countless times during coaching opportunities with my staff. I’ve traveled all over the United States and “code switching” really does work. Some of the best skills I acquired at the University were in public speaking.
I continued my education at the University of Virginia in their Retail Bank Management Graduate Program. I was asked to be a featured speaker at graduation and I still consider it one of my most treasured highlights. Many times throughout my career I’ve been asked to speak to large groups of colleagues and/or customers. Each time I begin preparation for these events, I use the skills learned from my UNCG public speaking professors.
For 13 years I was an employee of Bank of America where I was a charter member for their Specialized Lending Division financing Yachts, RV’s and small pleasure crafts. I excelled in Retail and Commercial Loan sales as well as managing a 19 state region. In 2004 Wachovia Dealer Services hired me to help establish them in the Indirect Marine and RV Industry. By 2006, I became their Senior Vice President – National Sales Manager.
My Professional Goal . . . Finally Accomplished !!!
Recently I departed Wachovia Dealer Services to fulfill a life long dream to own my own business. From all of the skills I learned in college through the many different jobs I’ve held in the banking business, each was a stepping stone to this point. My greatest advice to new graduates is to find your passion, capitalize on your strengths, apply the communication techniques you’ve learned at UNCG and don’t be afraid to take a risk. Success is sure to follow!
