Communication Studies

Holly Barett – B.A. 2002

Currently I am the Project Manager for Brazeal Stone & Cabinets. I have been working for them for about a year now. My job consists of multi-tasking, organization and most importantly people skills. Whether I am dealing with homeowners, designers, or contractors, my job is to assist them in making the right choices for their exterior and/or interior home design.

With a degree in Communication Studies I knew my choices were broad, but it was just a matter of discovering what fit me. From graduation day until my current job, I have worked as a Leasing Agent, sold office supplies, entered Nursing school, waited tables, and worked for a Lobbyist. I have taken this path for a reason and I am still soaking up experience. My educational experience gave me a new perspective on communication. I learned that just because I can talk to anyone it doesn’t mean that I am a good communicator.

Being able to communicate effectively and have your mind and words in sync is a lot harder than it sounds. All of my jobs have one thing in common and that is constant interaction with others. I enjoy meeting new people and being able to make a difference in their life. I know, at times, I will continue to struggle with my words and that my entire life will consist of learning. However, if it hadn’t of been for the proper training in school, I wouldn’t have the open mind and direction I have today.
