One week after graduating from UNCG in 2012 with a BA in Communication Studies I packed up and moved to New York City for a summer-long internship with a production company in Brooklyn. After three short months in the city I managed to meet dozens of excellent contacts in the New York theater world and it was not long before I landed a job with Lincoln Center Theater then Roundabout Theatre Company. Through networking and meeting new people I soon was offered my first full time job at Theatreworks USA.
For almost a year I have been working as the Assistant Company Manager and Marketing Assistant at Theatreworks USA, a nationally touring children’s theater company based in Manhattan. Working in theater management is exactly what I said I always wanted to do and I am thrilled to have made it my reality. Some of my responsibilities include planning/routing national tours and managing the cast and crew of many of our productions. Bringing live Broadway-quality productions to children all around the United States and Canada is a very rewarding and fulfilling experience. On a daily basis I talk with people all over the country in an effort to ensure that their experience with our company is the best possible.
I cannot stress enough how much of what I learned as a Communication Studies major at UNCG has come into play in my life since graduation. The things I learned at UNCG changed the way I think and react to the world around me. It gave me the courage to move to a city so different from home, the ability to communicate tactfully and effectively to make contacts in this professional community, and the strength and perseverance to follow through. Communication is the key and it is the foundation to any successful career. Each class and every professor in the Communication Studies department helped me to get to where I am today and for that I could not be more thankful.
