My senior year at UNCG (2003-2004) I had already begun my first full time job at the ARC Inc. of Greensboro as an employment specialist, providing long-term support for adult with disabilities who had jobs in our community.
Soon after graduation I moved abroad to Scotland. Although I wanted to stay in the non-profit sector, finding a job there proved harder then I expected. I ended up working at an oil company, splitting my time there between reception and accounts payable. Although the work was not exactly what I had been hoping for, the people I worked with and the opportunity to live in another country made it special. But that seems like ages ago.
I now live in Brooklyn, NY, and work for L’Oreal USA in their corporate HR department. My main responsibility is running the New Hire Welcome Center. As you can imagine we are a large company, and we generally have several new employees every week. My team conducts an orientation to make sure all new hires start out on the right foot with the information they need to start a successful career with us. I enjoy the public speaking and getting people excited about working for such an amazing company! I still have a passion for working with adults with disabilities, and for two years now I’ve chaperoned discos for UCP every other Friday night.
My degree at UNCG has allowed me to have a very diverse work experience. The ability to work with so many different people in so many different areas comes from being in classes with a diverse group of students. Most of my classes promoted class discussions on varying topics—we didn’t need to agree but we needed to listen and respect each other. And now I’m doing that out in the real world!
