Zithobile Nxumalo, MA, 2011, decided to pursue her graduate degree in Communication Studies after earning her BS in Business Management from Guilford College. The UNCG Communication Studies program led her to the expansion of her interests in organizational communication, health communication, critical pedagogy, and relational communication. She gained a thorough understanding of a variety of qualitative research methods that were used in her capstone project, which explored the role of social support in community-based food programs. This theme of human interdependence continues to drive her passion for helping others improve communication in a variety of contexts.
Zithobile is currently a full-time communication instructor at Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC) – Jamestown Campus – teaching courses in introductory communication, interpersonal communication, and public speaking. She is also an adjunct lecturer in the Speech Program at NC A&T State University. Her teaching style combines lecture with a discussion-based approach that encourages critical thinking and dialogue among students of diverse backgrounds.
Zithobile serves as an advisor of GTCC Communication Club, and as a member of the GTCC Global Education and Literacy Committee. She has participated in a number of teaching workshops and seminars, including the 2013 NC Great Teachers’ Seminar in Hendersonville, NC, and the May 2013 Summer Teaching Institute at NCA&TSU.
