Professional Statement

The professional statement is an opportunity for you to describe your educational background, relevant experience, career goals, and purpose for graduate study in the field of communication.   It is also very important to us that there is a good fit between what we do in our program and what your goals are.  Therefore, we also would like you to describe your scholarly interests and with which CST Graduate Faculty you are most interested in studying.  If you would like to be considered for a teaching assistantship, please also explain what prepares you to teach and why you would like the opportunity to teach at the college level.  Finally, please keep in mind that this statement also helps the Graduate Admissions committee assess your readiness for graduate work and your writing skills.

The following questions are possible examples of information that could be addressed:

  • Why do you wish to pursue an advanced degree in the field of Communication Studies?
  • How has your background and experience prepared you for graduate study in this field?
  • What are your possible career aspirations following graduate study?
  • Why have you chosen to apply to CST at UNCG specifically?  How does our program align with your goals?
  • What are your areas of interest?  With whom would you like to study (see list of Graduate Faculty)?
  • What is your interest in teaching an entry level communication course?  What has prepared you for teaching at this level
